Go Like an Owl: Cognitive Defusion

As dusk blankets the Appalachian forest in a cloak of twilight, the eastern screech owl takes to the skies, a shadow flitting gracefully through the trees. With wings outstretched, it glides silently, its rounded feathers absorbing any sound, allowing it to navigate the dense thicket with remarkable stealth. The soft rustle of leaves below is barely a whisper against the backdrop of chirping crickets and distant rustling of small mammals in the underbrush.

Its plumage—a blend of muted gray and warm reddish-brown—perfectly mimics the rough texture of the tree bark, providing an exquisite camouflage. As it swoops between the towering oaks and sycamores, the intricate patterns of its feathers blend harmoniously with the bark, rendering it almost invisible against the forest landscape. The last slivers of sunlight filter through the canopy, casting dappled shadows that dance across its path, yet the owl is undeterred, its keen eyes sharp and alert, reflecting the dim light like glimmers of stars.

The air is crisp, filled with the earthy scent of moss and damp leaves, as the owl navigates through the labyrinth of branches. It shifts effortlessly from one tree to the next, its small but sturdy body maneuvering with agility that belies its size. With each silent stroke of its wings, it rises above the underbrush, surveying its domain with a discerning gaze, always on the lookout for a precariously perched mouse or an unsuspecting insect.

Suddenly, hearing a faint rustle below, the screech owl pauses mid-flight, its head pivoting with a fluid grace. The forest seems to hold its breath as the owl hovers for a fleeting moment, wrapped in a cocoon of stillness. In an instant, it dives downward, wings folding tightly, a blur of feathers and determination. With uncanny precision, it lands on a low-hanging branch, a perfect perch from which to strike.

Atop its chosen limb, the owl momentarily stills, eyes wide and attentive, the outline of its delicate facial disk framing its focused gaze. The forest’s night symphony continues to swell around it, yet here, in this moment, the screech owl becomes the very embodiment of patience and watchfulness. In the dim light, as sounds of nature serenade the eventide, the owl remains undisturbed, a master of its realm, blending effortlessly into the Appalachian woodland.

The eastern screech owl is the perfect mentor for those of us wishing to nurture the silent observer within each of us. The owl's calm and patient presence amidst the chaos of life allows them to maintain their composure in the wild. Like the screech owl, we too can locate a solitary "branch" within ourselves or take to the wing above the fray, and from those vantage points we wisely engage with life. Our identity is not mixed up in the chaos around us. We are not the thoughts in our head, and the drama around us isn't who we are; those are just passersby.

The practice of "defusion" invites us to create space between private experiences—our thoughts and emotions. Like an owl, we become observers of the comings and goings of our inner ecology. Rather than being swept away by powerful cognitions or blowing up in reactivity, we can step back to observe and then choose our next steps. This can only be accomplished when we create space between our identities, who we are, and the experience we observe.

Here are some practical ways we can embody defusion:

1. Embrace Stillness: The screech owl is a master of patience and calm, often roosting silently during the day. By embracing stillness in our own lives through practices like meditation, we can cultivate a deeper awareness of our surroundings and our inner thoughts. We cannot hope to maintain stability in the presence of powerful cognitions and emotions unless we have practiced them in advance with intentionality and during moments of less distress.

2. Practice Observation: Just as the owl watches and listens intently, we can improve our ability to observe people and situations without immediate judgment. Take time to notice the details in your environment. Sketching, photography, journaling, and mindfulness exercises can help hone these abilities. Writing down, or drawing out, your thoughts and feelings are powerful practices to create space between you and these experiences.

3. Develop Inner Strength: Owls rely on their own wit and wisdom. Knowing who we are and what is important allows us to stand firm in our beliefs and decisions without being swayed by external chaos. Practice good mental hygiene by avoiding actions and substances that weaken your inner resolve.

4. Communicate Wisely: The owl's haunting calls are purposeful. We can strive to communicate with purpose, choosing our words carefully. After all, language shapes experience, and the way we say it matters - even when we speak to ourselves inwardly. Using phrases like "I am having the thought that...." and "this is anger/sadness" creates space, whereas the phrase "I am angry/sad" removes space by staking our identity within the passing emotion. Softening our tone, or speaking our thoughts in a silly timbre, shifts the experience slightly and creates space. When in doubt, remember that the owl flies in silence. Silence can be golden. We can bypass the setbacks of language by settling into our physical experience. As our brains pull us back into language, we can gently return, over and over again, into our bodies and notice the sensations we discover there.

By incorporating defusion strategies, we can cultivate a mindset similar to that of the eastern screech owl, navigating through life with grace and wisdom, and ultimately discovering a deeper sense of self amidst the chaos. May it be so.
